"Why would a Police Officer or Military Trainer need this course?"
"Most SWAT team members are smart enough to fear one stealthy knife-proficient attacker than 5 guys with guns..."
The now famous 10+ city "Vancouver" police knife study, which involved over 40 scenarios, definitively proved the need for more knife training, even for the most elite SWAT and SOCOM military units.
Heavily armored, M4 carrying officers and troops were astounded to see their group casualty rate vs. just one proficient knife opponent in an urban trial center. These trials included 6 US cities plus London, Vancouver, Toronto and several others.
The trials started with two speech variables, including "Don't shoot me, I'm unarmed," and Silence, and evolved to "I'm going to kill you," and "I'm going to stab you, pig..." In even the announced attacks, officers armed with guns and clubs were astonished to see their simulated kills on video after the training. Many wouldn't even believe the assailant HAD a knife until close up stills of the videos were shown them.
This is very typical of pre-frontal shutdown during stress. Tunnel vision, deafness, lack of fine motor skills and inability to think are often described, but other advanced states such as vertigo, fainting, freezing, near blindness, and denial are experienced often, but not often admitted. The small size of a knife, combined with adrenalin-induced visual compromise can spell disaster for the officer not trained in knife defense techniques. Some attacked officers still wouldn't believe the assailant had a knife after being stabbed or slashed numerous times, until it was proven via their injuries, recovered weapons, suspects and witnesses!
In watching hundreds of police aftermath videos of knife attacks, the MAJORITY of both police and military fighters do just the OPPOSITE of what is needed to survive and win a knife attack, including improper distance closing, incorrect attacks on the wrist, improper use of elbows, knees and "martial arts" techniques, and many other responses that even the beginning ETI Blade Combat student can diagnose.
